14 Free Granny Stripe Blanket Patterns

14 Free Granny Stripe Blanket Patterns

The granny stripe is the granny square’s laid-back cousin. You work the same cozy clusters of three double crochets, but in straight rows instead of rounds. No joining, no counting corners, just stripe after stripe of color. It is one of the best stitches for using up leftover yarn.

This list has 14 free granny stripe blanket patterns and tutorials. You will find big throws, baby blankets, a stash buster, an ombre version with no color changes, and a few stitch tutorials to help you learn the basic rows first.

FAQ

Is the granny stripe hard for beginners?
No. If you can chain and make a double crochet, you can make a granny stripe. You only repeat two rows: clusters of three double crochets go into the spaces between the clusters below. The tricky part is the edge stitches, so count carefully on your first few rows.

What is the starting chain for a granny stripe blanket?
Most granny stripe patterns use a multiple of 3 plus 2. For example, 62, 92 or 122 chains. Some designers use slightly different counts, so always follow the pattern you chose. Make a small swatch first to see how wide your chain will be.

How much yarn do I need for a granny stripe blanket?
It varies with size and yarn weight. Attic24’s large DK blanket used 18 balls of 100 g. A baby blanket usually needs much less, often 4 to 6 skeins of worsted. Check the yarn list in your pattern before buying.
