Which One Should You Make?

  • Brand new to granny squares? Start with #1. It teaches the basic cluster and corner you will use in almost every other square.
  • Want color without much effort? Try #2 or #3. Each round is a new color, so scraps work well.
  • Planning a sampler blanket? Pair #9, #10 and #11. They are all 12-inch blocks in worsted weight.
  • Looking for something modern? Go for #4 or #5. The mitered and corner-to-corner shapes feel fresh.
  • Love texture? Make #7 or #12.

FAQ

What yarn is best for granny squares?
Worsted weight (#4) acrylic or cotton is the easiest place to start. It is affordable, comes in many colors, and shows the stitches clearly. DK yarn makes smaller, lighter squares. Whatever you pick, use the same weight for every square in one project so they match in size.

How big is a granny square?
There is no fixed size. A classic five-round square in worsted yarn is usually about 5 inches. Blanket blocks are often 12 inches. You can always add rounds to make a square bigger, which is one reason granny squares are so flexible.

Why is my granny square twisting?
Squares often twist because each round starts in the same spot and the stitches lean one way. Turning your work after each round, like in pattern #1, helps a lot. Blocking at the end will also straighten a square that curves a little.

Pick one square, grab your scraps, and see how many you can finish this week.
