13 Solid Granny Square Patterns and Ideas
A solid granny square is just like the classic one, but without the holes. Instead of chain spaces between clusters, you work stitches into every stitch, so the fabric is thicker, warmer and much better for bags, cushions and sweaters.
This list is for crocheters who love granny squares but want a cleaner, denser look. You will find seamless beginner squares, a few clever “no gaps” corners, and some textured blocks that are still solid all the way through. Every pattern is free.

FAQ
What is the difference between a granny square and a solid granny square?
A classic granny square has groups of stitches with chain spaces between them, which leaves small holes. A solid granny square fills those spaces with stitches, so the fabric is closed. It uses more yarn but is warmer and holds its shape better.
How do you make a solid granny square with no gaps at the corners?
Most no-gap patterns replace the chain-2 corner space with a taller stitch, usually a treble crochet, worked right into the corner stitch. Patterns #2, #7 and #8 all use this trick. Blocking at the end also helps the corners sit flat and sharp.
Why does my solid granny square curl or ruffle?
Curling usually means your stitches are too tight or there are too few stitches per round. Ruffling means too many. Count each side after every round, and try a bigger hook if the square cups. Gentle wet blocking fixes small issues.
Solid squares take a little more yarn, but the cozy, sturdy result is worth it.
